Child Safe Blinds: What You Need to Know

Blind cords and chains are a strangulation hazard for young children. This is a serious issue — there have been fatalities in the UK caused by children becoming entangled in blind cords. If you have young children at home, it's important to choose blinds carefully.

The Regulations

Since 2014, all new blinds sold in the UK must comply with BS EN 13120:2009, which requires that any accessible cords or chains are kept out of reach of children, or that the blind is designed to be inherently safe. From March 2022, new regulations came into force that effectively ban looped cords and chains on blinds sold for domestic use in the UK.

This means that any new blind you buy from a reputable supplier should already meet the current safety standards. However, older blinds in your home may not comply — it's worth checking.

The Safest Blind Types

Perfect Fit Blinds

Perfect Fit blinds have no exposed cords or chains — the operating mechanism is built into the frame. They're one of the safest blind options for homes with young children and are available as roller, pleated, or Venetian.

Plantation Shutters

Shutters have no cords or chains at all. The louvres are adjusted by hand and the panels open and close manually. They're completely cord-free and one of the safest window coverings available.

Spring Roller Blinds

Spring-operated roller blinds have no chain — they're operated by pulling the blind down and releasing it. No looped cord means no strangulation risk.

Motorised Blinds

Motorised blinds are operated by remote control or smart home system — no cords or chains required. An excellent option for homes with young children, though more expensive than manual blinds.

Making Existing Blinds Safer

If you have older blinds with looped cords or chains, there are a few things you can do to reduce the risk:

  • Use a cleat or cord tidy to keep cords wound up and out of reach when not in use.
  • Keep furniture away from windows so children can't climb up to reach cords.
  • Consider replacing older blinds with cord-free alternatives.
