How to Choose the Right Blinds for Every Room

Choosing the right blind comes down to three things: the room it's going in, how much light control you need, and how easy it is to clean. Get those three right and the rest — colour, fabric, finish — is straightforward.

Bedroom

The bedroom is where blackout matters most. If you're a light sleeper or have young children, a blackout roller blind or blackout Roman blind will block out early morning light completely. For a softer look, a lined Roman blind in a heavy fabric works well. If you have uPVC windows, Perfect Fit blinds are a clean, cord-free option that's also child safe.

Best choices: Blackout roller, blackout Roman, Perfect Fit.

Living Room

Living rooms usually need a balance of light control and style. Roman blinds in a patterned or textured fabric add warmth and character. Venetian blinds — particularly real wood or faux wood — suit both modern and traditional rooms. If you have large windows or a bay, vertical blinds are practical and cost-effective.

Best choices: Roman, wood Venetian, vertical.

Kitchen

Kitchens need blinds that can handle steam, grease, and splashes. Aluminium Venetian blinds are the classic choice — they wipe clean in seconds and are available in dozens of colours. Moisture-resistant roller blinds are another good option, especially if you want a printed or patterned fabric. Avoid fabric Roman blinds in the kitchen — they absorb cooking smells and are harder to clean.

Best choices: Aluminium Venetian, moisture-resistant roller.

Bathroom

Like kitchens, bathrooms need moisture-resistant materials. Faux wood Venetians are popular — they look like real wood but won't warp or discolour in a humid environment. PVC roller blinds and Perfect Fit blinds are also good choices. Avoid real wood and fabric blinds in bathrooms.

Best choices: Faux wood Venetian, PVC roller, Perfect Fit.

Home Office

Glare on screens is the main problem in a home office. Roller blinds in a solar fabric reduce glare without blocking the view or making the room feel dark. Aluminium Venetian blinds give you precise control — tilt the slats to direct light away from your screen without closing the blind completely.

Best choices: Solar roller, aluminium Venetian.

Conservatory

Conservatories are the trickiest room to blind. The roof is the priority — pleated blinds or Duette blinds are the standard choice for conservatory roofs, as they can be made to fit the sloped panels. For the side windows, Perfect Fit blinds are ideal as they clip into the uPVC frames without drilling. Vertical blinds work well for large conservatory doors.

Best choices: Pleated (roof), Perfect Fit (side windows), vertical (doors).

One Last Thing

Whatever room you're buying for, made-to-measure blinds will always look better than ready-made. A blind that fits the window exactly — with no gaps at the sides and no bunching at the bottom — makes a real difference to how a room looks and how well the blind performs.
