Venetian and roller blinds are the two most popular blind types in the UK — and for good reason. Both are practical, affordable, and available in a huge range of colours and finishes. But they work differently and suit different rooms and lifestyles.
Light Control
Venetian blinds give you the most precise light control of any blind type. The horizontal slats tilt to let in as much or as little light as you want — you can have the blind fully closed for privacy, tilted to let in diffused light, or fully open. This makes them particularly good for offices and rooms where you want to manage glare.
Roller blinds are either open or closed — there's no in-between. That said, the fabric you choose makes a big difference. A sheer or solar fabric lets in diffused light while maintaining privacy. A blackout fabric blocks light completely. For most rooms, roller blinds give you enough control.
Cleaning
Venetian blinds — particularly aluminium ones — are easy to wipe clean with a damp cloth. The slats can be dusted individually. Faux wood and real wood Venetians are slightly more work but still straightforward.
Roller blinds are even easier to clean. A single flat piece of fabric can be wiped down quickly. Some fabrics are machine washable. For kitchens and bathrooms, a wipe-clean roller blind is hard to beat.
Style
Venetian blinds have a classic, structured look. Real wood Venetians add warmth and character to living rooms and bedrooms. Aluminium Venetians suit contemporary kitchens and offices.
Roller blinds are cleaner and more minimal. They suit modern interiors well and can be made in an enormous range of fabrics — from plain block colours to bold prints and patterns. If you want a blind that disappears into the background, a roller is usually the better choice.
Cost
Both types are available at a wide range of price points. Aluminium Venetian blinds are generally the most affordable option. Real wood Venetians and quality roller blinds in premium fabrics are at the higher end. For made-to-measure blinds, the price difference between the two types is usually small.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose a Venetian blind if you want precise light control, you're fitting it in a kitchen or bathroom (aluminium or faux wood), or you want a classic look with real or faux wood.
Choose a roller blind if you want a clean, minimal look, you need a blackout blind for a bedroom, or you want a patterned or printed fabric.
